Spencer’s music career started at the age of 17 in his homeland of the UK, recording and touring with some of the nations best musicians – Adrian Smith (Iron Maiden), Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin), Scott Gorham (Thin Lizzy), Deborah Bonham, Kim Mazelle (Soul2Soul), Mica Paris, Asia, and more.
While singing on stage in London, in walked the girl of his dreams. An Australian named Claudia – Spencer found he couldn’t let her go, followed her down under, got married, had 2 adorable children, and for the past 20 years has happily made Australia his home.
Just as he had left off in London, Spencer picked it right back up when landing in Australia, recording and singing live with Australia’s best – Jimmy Barnes, Dave Leslie (Baby Animals), Ash Maklad (Wendy Matthews, Expatriate), Craig Porteils (Richie Sambora, Shannon Noll), the multi Aria and Grammy award winning Eric J Dubowsky and many more.
As well as a touring and recording background throughout Europe and Australia, Spencer is an accomplished session vocalist as well as a Singer/Songwriter. Last year he listened to words his Father-In-Law used to say, “You need to go on The Voice!" and did just that. With his raspy vocals and bluesy rock tone he was quickly dubbed the “Rock God” on last season of The Voice Australia and became the most successful rock vocalist the show has ever seen. The crowd erupted every time Spencer took the stage and while bravely taking on the risky choice of Adele's Skyfall showing his softer side, he won the hearts of Australians everywhere. This single performance proved his versatility as a singer, taking him all the way to the Semi Finals which was more than he ever imagined and has proven the world stage is where he needs to be. After choosing Kelly Rowland as his coach on the acclaimed show, she stated, "Greatness, like you!" while mentoring him ahead of his Knockout round. She was yet again impressed by his battle performance against Stan Walker's older brother, Russ Walker, saying "Spencer, you showed up tonight. A light went up and you said ok it's time to be great! And you really, really believed it." She went on to say why she chose him to lead her team into the live shows, "The person I feel who really rose to the challenge and I can trust in the live shows is, Spencer"
Spencer draws his influences from artists such as Paul Rodgers, Rod Stewart, The Black Crowes, Sheryl Crow, Paolo Nutini, Jack Savoretti and Adele. Since the show, Spencer has worked with some of Australia's best musicians including Daryl Braithwaite, Angry Anderson, Steve Balbi, Guy Delandro, Casey Donovan, Jeff Duff, Melanie Dyer, Mark Gable, Steve Kilbey, Melinda Schneider, Glenn Shorrock, Alex Smith, Rai Thistlethwayte, Mark Williams and John Paul Young.
